The heart is an important organ. It is a muscle that circulates blood throughout your body. Your body gets the oxygen and nutrition it needs to function from the blood your heart pumps. Your heart weighs between 300 and 450 g and is about the size of a clenched hand. It is located in the center of your chest, somewhat to the left and behind your breastbone. Your body contains about five litres of blood, which circulates through your heart roughly once per minute if you are of average height and weight. Your heart can beat up to four times as fast per minute if necessary, such as during activity. Right and left halves of your heart are divided by a septal wall. A tiny collecting chamber called a "atrium" and a big pumping chamber called a "ventricle" are located on either side of the wall. There are two upper chambers, the left and right atriums, and two bottom chambers, the left and right ventricles.
