Although the phrases artery and atherosclerosis are occasionally used interchangeably, they have different meanings. As the arteries—the blood channels that transport oxygen and nutrients from the heart to the rest of the body—become thick and stiff, blood flow to the organs and tissues may occasionally be restricted. This condition is known as arteriosclerosis. Flexible and elastic arteries indicate good health. Nonetheless, the artery walls can stiffen over time, a phenomenon known as arterial hardening. Arteriosclerosis has a particular subtype called atherosclerosis. The accumulation of lipids, cholesterol, and other chemicals in and on the artery walls is known as atherosclerosis. The accumulation is known as plaque. Atherosclerosis can constrict the arteries and obstruct blood flow. The plaque may rupture and cause a blood clot. Symptoms of mild atherosclerosis are typically nonexistent. Typically, atherosclerosis symptoms do not appear until an artery has become so constricted or blocked that it is unable to adequately provide blood to organs and tissues. A blood clot can occasionally entirely stop the flow of blood. A heart attack or stroke may occur if the clot fragments.
