Cardiologists are known as heart specialists. When referred by their primary care physician, the majority of patients see a cardiologist. They may be experiencing shortness of breath, heart murmurs, changes in their electrocardiogram, or chest pain. The symptoms can then be examined by a cardiologist in order to diagnose a condition and develop an effective treatment or management plan. In more serious cases, cardiologists are also involved. Cardiothoracic surgeons require their expertise for certain procedures. Cardiac catheterization, balloon angioplasty, and heart transplants are examples of such procedures. They usually perform a physical exam on patients when they see them. They may also request certain tests, such as ECGs, X-rays, or blood tests. They may recommend or perform an echocardiogram, an ambulatory ECG, an exercise test, or a cardiac catheterization depending on the patient.
